Pipe Bursting in PG County & Montgomery County

Some sewer pipes are beyond repair — collapsed, completely deteriorated, or too far gone for lining. When that’s the case, pipe bursting is the trenchless answer. At East Coast Drain and Trenchless Sewer Repair, we replace your failed sewer line with a brand new HDPE pipe, all without opening a single trench. Same result as traditional excavation. A fraction of the disruption.

What Is CIPP Pipe Bursting?

Pipe bursting is a trenchless method of full sewer line replacement. A bursting head — a cone-shaped tool — is pulled through the existing pipe, fracturing it outward into the surrounding soil while simultaneously pulling a new, durable HDPE (high-density polyethylene) pipe into the space left behind.

The old pipe is destroyed and displaced. The new pipe takes its place. No trenches. No excavation. No restoration bills.

It’s the most effective solution when a pipe is too structurally compromised for rehabilitation through lining — and it results in a completely new sewer line that outperforms the original.

Our Bursting Process

1

Camera Inspection & Assessment

Before any work begins, we run a full CCTV camera inspection to assess the pipe's condition, map the line, and confirm that pipe bursting is the right approach. This step also identifies the entry and exit points we'll use for the operation.

2

Access Point Excavation

Unlike traditional sewer replacement — which requires trenching the entire pipe run — pipe bursting only requires two small access pits: one at each end of the pipe section being replaced. This is the only digging involved in the entire process.

3

Bursting Head Insertion

A steel cable is threaded through the existing pipe from one access pit to the other. The bursting head — attached to the new HDPE pipe — is connected to the cable and pulled through the old pipe at a controlled pace.

4

Simultaneous Replacement

As the bursting head travels through the pipe, it fractures the old pipe outward and pulls the new HDPE pipe in behind it in a single continuous pass. The host pipe material — whether it's cast iron, clay, Orangeburg, or concrete — is broken apart and displaced into the surrounding soil.

5

Connection & Final Inspection

After curing, we conduct a post-installation camera inspection to confirm the liner is fully seated, smooth, and performing correctly. You get a fully rehabilitated pipe — verified on camera before we leave.

When Is Pipe Bursting the Right Solution?

Pipe bursting is the preferred option when:

  • The pipe has fully collapsed or has major structural failure
  • There is extensive root intrusion that has compromised the pipe beyond rehabilitation
  • The pipe material is Orangeburg — a tar-paper pipe that degrades over time and cannot be reliably lined
  • Severe corrosion has left the pipe walls too thin or compromised for a liner to adhere properly
  • The pipe has large-scale joint displacement or misalignment
  • A homeowner or property manager wants a complete replacement rather than rehabilitation

The Pipe That Outlasts Everything

When we burst your old line, the replacement pipe we install is HDPE — high-density polyethylene. It's the industry standard for trenchless replacement, and for good reason:

Corrosion-proof

HDPE will never rust, scale, or corrode

Root-resistant

the fused, seamless joints give roots nowhere to enter

Flexible and durable

handles ground movement without cracking

Long service life

rated for 100+ years under normal conditions

Minor Pipe Collapse

Where the pipe retains enough structural support for a liner to be installed

Smooth interior

superior flow characteristics compared to corroded cast iron or clay

Once we replace your line with HDPE, it's the last sewer pipe replacement you'll ever need.

Pipe Bursting for Residential & Commercial Properties

Residential Pipe Bursting

For homeowners across PG County and Montgomery County, pipe bursting is the answer when a sewer line has reached the end of its service life. The older residential neighborhoods throughout the region — including areas like Takoma Park, Hyattsville, Bladensburg, and New Carrollton — are home to decades-old Orangeburg, vitrified clay, and cast iron sewer systems that often require full replacement rather than rehabilitation.

Commercial Pipe Bursting

We also handle commercial and light municipal pipe bursting projects throughout the DC Metro area. Whether it's a multi-unit residential building, a commercial facility, or a property with larger diameter infrastructure, our team has the experience and equipment to handle it. Our background in large-scale pipe work means commercial and municipal jobs are well within our capability.
